Interview Enter Shikari 09.10.07 Grünspan, Hamburg



Q: Please,  first introduce yourself to my readers?

Rob: Hey I’m Rob.
Rory: And I’m Rory…
Rob: And we’re from Enter Shikari.

Q: Describe your bandmembers and yourself with some words?

Rob: We’re pretty cool. The others are Chris and Rou.
Rory: See, Chris is the one that gets all the ladies.
Rob: Yeah, Chris is, what they call it, the Hugh Grant of Enter Shikari. Rou is quiet cute. He`s been getting furry recently. He’s been getting a bit more facial hair. It’s coming out nicely.
Rory: Let’s say Rob’s the crazy one.
Rob: Whoo.
Rory: And I’m pretty quiet.
Rob: Yeah, Rory is the quiet and nice one apperently.

Q: Have you ever thought of working with some other artists? Which one would it be?

Rory: We’re gonna do a collaboration with YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO. They’re one of your favourite bands from years ago and we’ve didn’t told them and now they break up.
Rob: Bastards (laughing). They left us to do.
Rory: We also did a collaboration with Andy Grey. He wrote the Big Brother Theme. Paul Oakenfold would also be great.

Q: Imagine you would be a song. Which one would it be and which one describes you the best?

Rob: If I was a song, I would be “Black Betty” (starts to sing). But I don’t know if it’s describes me cause I’m not black and my name is not Betty.
Rory: I don’t know cause there are different songs for different moods, so it’s hard.
Rob: Another one would be “My girl party all the time” cause it’s a good dance song where you can dance to. And I’m partying a lot so that’s mostly the best.
Rory: Probably The Streets with “Push things forwards.

Q: What would you have become, if you don’t be a musician?

Rob: Maybe homeless (laughing). Probably at home at my parents.
Rory: We have been talking about that every day cause we went in so fast and we can’t imagine what we have done if this not happen. I was at university and learning to making guitars. Maybe that would be my job.

Q: Have you a special ritual before getting on the stage like coming together and speak to each other?

Rob: We always have a shit before we go on stage all of us.
Rory: Normally we putting up with Chris’s vocal warm ups. He’s got the loudest voice in the world.
Rob: Just before we go on stage, we’re coming together and wishing us luck.
Rory: Yeah but it’s really strange cause ten minutes before the gig you feel totally normal and then you change into the gig-mood.
Rob: And then you’re a different person and go on stage and freak out.

Q: What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you on tour?

Rob: On your first day in Japan I saw a cat dressed up in clothes riding on a tricycle. That was really really strange to all of us.
Rory: Yeah, also in Japan we went out to a karaoke bar and we were staying there all night. Chris was completely out of it. When we were getting out of the bar, he was filling up the leftover beer into a bag and was carrying it all over the street.
Rob: Yeah with the straw in it to drink out of the bag.
Rory: Yes, right. We finally got back to your hotel after been to three different other hotels which were wrong. And when we find the right one there were standing there girls outside of the hotel waiting for us wanting photographs and signing cds. It was like seven o’clock in the morning and they’ve been waiting all the time. That was probably the weirdest thing that happens to us.

Q: Is there any dream you would like to come true cause you’re pretty big everything. Something which is left?

Rob: Not really cause most dreams have already happened. Go on stage playing our music to all the people, is a dream come true. Maybe it sounds cheesy to say yeah it’s a dream come true to play in front of all the people but it’s that what we have dreamed.
Rory: And what’s coming after this is just a bonus what makes it even better.

Q: Do you remember the first concert ever you play together as a band? And how was it?

Rob: The first gig Rory played with Enter Shikari, I broke my arm, so I didn’t play that show.
Rory: Which one we play together?
Rob: I really can’t imagine it cause it’s been so long ago maybe the one in Hallow.

Q: Which question would you like to be asked in an interview which is not normal and what would be the answer?

Rob: Do you like to have a blowjob by our fans? I haven’t heard that one yet. And the answer would be sure why not.
Rory: The best question are the ones which you don’t expect so something like (thinking) I don’t know one right now.

Q: Which was the weirdest question you ever got maybe in an interview or by a fan?

Rob: The weirdest interview we’ve ever done, was on a festival and a woman came in with a big bag and gave us tiny instruments and wants us to play on it. She was recording it and that was the whole interview. I think that was the strangest interview we’ve ever had.

Q: What kind of shows do you like? Is it better to play in small clubs, festival or stadiums?

Rory: They’re all pretty good for different reasons. The club ones are recently more intimae. You can see most of the people and get a lot more personal with the fans. Stadiums are obviously just a bust cause there are so many people. We’re not that kind of band which only does one kind. You need both to keep you interested.

Q: But don’t you get annoyed when people come on stage and do photos with you during the gig?

Rob: It’s cool when they get on stage and then do stage diving but yeah I would be annoyed if I’m standing there and do my show and then someone is coming to get a photo with me.
Rory: Yeah that’s the worst. It’s not the time to taking fukking myspace pictures.

Q: So tell me some really good reasons why people have to buy our first album?

Rory: I can’t think of any reason to be honesty.
Rob: (thinking) It’s a must have.

Q: What do you like most on touring in Germany which makes Germany special?

Rob: The food is good in germany and the catering you get before the gig is really nice.
Rory: We like Schnitzels....(laughing).

Q: How will your music develop in the future?

Rory: We haven’t actually written our second album yet but I think it’s really gonna go into the direction of more hardcore and more trance. But we really gonna experiment and not hold back with ideas.
Rob: It’s really gonna get better, even better.
Rory: But you can never tell till the ball starts rolling in which way it’s gotta go.

Q: You’ve won so many prices, last ones were the two Kerrang Awards. Have even expect them after touring so long and hard?

Rory: No, we weren’t actually expecting them. We won the Best Live Band which mean a lot to us cause it’s the amount of people which must have voted for us. So that means they must actually think we are the best live band. It’s quit amazing.

Q: Rou has got to side projects, do you have any plans like Rou or don’t you got the time for it?

Rob: I got a lot of tunes, which I’ve been have told to put on a myspace-music-account but I can’t figure out which one I should use, so I think no.
Rory: I like something like a funk-rock-blues band, so completely different but I think it don’t gonna happen for a couple of years till we got a little bit more time.

Q: Last question, why are you going on tour with LostAlone again?

Rory: Yeah, they’re really good band and they play really good live.
Rob: Pretty nice guys.
Rory: It’s the whole package which fits together but they’re not too good to steal us the show (Laughing).

Q: So thank you very much for the interview , was a pleasure to meet you and good luck for the show.

F: So viele meiner Leser wissen vielleicht nicht wer ihr seid, also stellt euch kurz vor?

Rob: Hallo, ich bin Rob.
Rory: Und ich bin Rory…
Rob: Und wir spielen bei Enter Shikari.

F: Beschreibt euch und die andern beiden kurz mit einigen Worten?

Rob: Wir sind alle ziemlich lustig und die andern sind Chris und Rou.
Rory: Genau und Chris ist derjenige, der immer alle Frauen bekommt.
Rob: Yeah, Chris ist, wie haben sie ihn mal genannt, der Hugh Grant von Enter Shikari. Rou lässt sich im Moment nen Bart wachsen und man kann sagen es sieht sehr gut aus.
Rory: Und Rob ist der Verrückte in der Band.
Rob: Ja genau.
Rory: Ich bin ziemlich ruhig.
Ron: Yeah, Rory ist der ruhige und nette Part der Band.

F: Hab ihr schon mal darüber nachgedacht mit irgendeinem andern Musiker zusammen zuarbeiten,
welche wäre das dann?

Rory: Wir machen vielleicht eine Kollaboration mit YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO. Sie sind eine unserer Lieblingsband von früher, aber wir haben es ihnen nie gesagt und nun lösen sie sich gerade auf.
Rob Idioten. Sie haben uns einfach im Stich gelassen.
Rory: Wir haben schon eine mit Andy Grey gemacht. Der hat die Big Brother Titelmusik gemacht. Paul Oakenfold wäre auch sehr cool.

F: Wenn ihr ein Song wärt, welche würde am besten zu euch passen?

Rob: Wenn ich ein Song wäre, wäre ich „Black Betty“ (fängt an zu singen). Aber ich bin mir nicht so sicher ob der zu mir passt, weil ich nicht schwarz bin und meine Name auch nicht Betty ist.
Rory: Ich weiß nicht, weil jeder Song zu einer bestimmten Situation passt, also ist es ziemlich schwer.
Rob: Ein anderer wäre „My girl party all the time“, weil das ein guter Song zum tanzen ist und ich ziemlich oft feiern gehe, also ist das der Beste.
Rory: Vielleicht The Streets mit „Push things forward“.

F: Was hättet ihr gemacht, wenn ihr keine Musik machen würdet?

Rob: Vielleicht obdachlos (lacht) Wohl eher zu hause bei meinen Eltern sitzen.
Rory: Wir reden darüber fast jeden Tag, weil wir auf einmal so erfolgreich geworden sind und wir uns nicht wirklich vorstellen können, was sonst gewesen wäre. Ich war vorher an der Uni und habe gelernt, wie man Gitarren baut, vielleicht würde ich so was machen.

F: Habt ihr ein spezielles Ritual, bevor ihr auf die Bühne geht, wie zusammen kommen und miteinander reden?

Rob: Wir gehen vorher alle noch mal auf Klo.
Rory: Normalerweise hören wir Chris beim Einsingen zu, weil er wirklich die lauteste Stimme auf der Welt hat.
Rob. Kurz bevor wir auftreten, kommen wir kurz zusammen und wünschen uns Glück.
Rory: Genau, aber es ist wirklich komisch, weil zehn Minuten vor dem Gig fühlst du dich ganz normal und dann macht es Klick und du bist bereit auf die Bühne zu gehen.
Rob: Du bist dann ein komplett andere Person und flippst auf der Bühne aus.

F: Was ist das Verrückteste was jemals auf einer Tour passiert ist?

Rob: An unserem ersten Tag in Japan hab ich eine Katze gesehen, die komplett mit Klamotten bekleidet war und auf einem Dreirad saß. Das war wirklich wirklich komisch.
Rory: Stimmt. Wir waren ebenfalls in Japan in einer Karaoke Bar und waren da die ganze Nacht. Chris hat sich wirklich ziemlich besoffen und als wir gegangen sind, hat er das übrige Bier in eine Tüte gegossen und ist damit durch die Strassen gezogen (lacht).
Rob: Ja genau, mit nem Strohhalm in der Tüte zum trinken.
Rory: Oh ja, nachdem wir dann an drei falschen Hotel waren, kamen wir endlich an unserem Hotel an und davor standen drei Fans, die auf uns gewartet haben und Fotos und Autogramme haben wollten. Es war irgendwie sieben Uhr am Morgen und sie  haben die ganze Zeit gewartet. Das war wahrscheinlich das verrückteste was uns passiert ist.

F: Gibt es eigentlich nach all dem Erfolg noch Träume, die ihr euch erfüllen wollt.

Rob: Nicht wirklich, weil die meisten Träume sind bereits wahr geworden. Auf der Bühne stehen und unsere Songs vor Publikum zu spielen war unser Traum. Hört sich vielleicht komisch an das zusagen, aber das ist, wovon wir geträumt haben.
Rory: Alles andere, was jetzt kommt ist sozusagen ein Bonus, was alles noch besser macht.

F: Könnt ihr euch noch an euren ersten Gig als Enter Shikari erinnern?

Rob: Den ersten Gig, bei dem Rory mitspielt, konnte ich nicht mitspielen, weil ich meinen Arm gebrochen hatte,
Rory: Welche haben wir denn zusammen gespielt?
Rob: Ich weiß es nicht mehr wirklich, weil das schon so lange her ist, aber vielleicht der in Hallow.

F: Welche Frage, die nicht normal ist, würdet ihr gern mal gefragt werden und was ist die Antwort?

Rob: Würdet ihr gern von euren Fans ein Blowjob bekommen. Die hab ich noch nicht gehört. Und die Antwort wäre natürlich ja klar, warum nicht.
Rory: Die besten Fragen sind die mit denen man nicht rechnet wie (überlegt) mir fällt keine ein.

F: Welches war die verrückteste Frage, die euch gestellt wurde, in einem Interview oder von einem Fan?

Rob: Das verrückteste Interview war auf einem Festival und die Frau kam mit einer großen Tasche zu uns und gab uns kleine Spielzeuginstrumente und wollte das wir drauf spielen. Sie hat das aufgenommen und das war das ganze Interview. Ich glaube, das war das komischste Interview, welches wir jemals hatten.

F: Was für Shows mögt ihr lieber, Clubs, Festivals oder Stadions?

Rory: Sie sind eigentlich alle cool aus verschiedenen Gründen. In Clubs ist es wesentlich intimer und man bekommt mehr von den Leuten mit und es ist wesentlich persönlicher. Stadions sind einfach nur der Hammer, weil dort ein riesige Masse an Menschen ist. Aber wir sind nicht so festgelegt auf das eine oder andere, weil man beide braucht damit es nicht langweilig wird.

F: Aber nervt es euch nicht, wenn die Leute auf die Bühne kommen und Fotos mit euch machen, während ihr performt?

Rob: Es ist eigentlich cool, wenn sie auf die Bühne kommen und dann stagediven, aber ich wäre wirklich genervt, wenn ich auf der Bühne stehe und dann jemand kommt und mit mir ein Foto macht.
Rory: Stimmt, das ist das schlimmste. Es ist dann nicht die Zeit für Myspace – Fotos.

F: Nennt mir Gründe, warum die Leute eure erstes Album kaufen sollten?

Rory: Mir fallen keine Gründe ein um ehrlich zu sein….
Rob: (denkt nach) Es ist ein Must – Have.

F: Was mögt am Touren in Deutschland am meisten, was macht es so besonders?

Rob: Das Essen in Deutschland ist gut und das Catering bei den Konzerten ist richtig nett.
Rory: Wir lieben Schnitzel.,,,(Lacht).

F: Wie denkt ihr wird sich eure Musik weiterentwickeln?

Rory: Wir haben zwar noch nicht mit dem zweiten Album angefangen, aber ich glaube, dass es in die Richtung geht, mehr Hardcore und mehr Trance. Aber wir wollen experimentieren und alle Ideen einfließen lassen.
Rob: Es wird auf jeden Fall besser, noch besser als das erste.
Rory: Aber man kann nie wirklich was sagen, bevor man anfängt, in welche Richtung es geht.

F: Ihr habt in letzter Zeit einige Preise gewonnen. Als letztes zwei Kerrang Awards. Habt ihr nach den langen und harten Touren so was erwartet?

Rory: Nein, wir haben nicht wirklich damit gerechnet. Wir haben ja den Preis für die Beste Live Band gewonnen, welcher eine Menge für uns bedeutet, weil eine sehr große Menge an Leuten uns gewählt hat und uns wohl für die beste Live Band hält. Es ist wirklich fantastisch.

F: Rou hat ja zwei Nebenprojekte, hab ihr auch solche Pläne oder keine Zeit dafür im Moment?

Rob:  Also ich hab ziemlich viele Sachen, wo mir gesagt wird ich soll sie online stellen, aber ich weiß nicht wirklich welche und so denk ich eher nein.
Rory: Ich würde gern so was machen wie eine Funk-Rock-Blues Band, also was komplett anders aber ich glaube, das wird die nächsten Jahre nichts. Vielleicht wenn wir in ein paar Jahren mehr Zeit haben.

F: Letzte Frage, warum seid ihr wieder mir LostAlone auf Tour?

Rory: Ja, sie sind ne ziemlich gute Band und sind live auch gut.
Rob: Wirklich nette Jungs.
Rory: Es ist einfach das ganze Packet, was stimmt, aber sie sind nicht zu gut um uns die Show zu stellen (lacht).

F: Danke schön für das Interview, es war schön euch getroffen zu haben und viel Glück für die Show.
